Katie Mathews has been at Northside College Prep, a Chicago Public Selective Enrollment High School, since Fall 2012. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations from
Valparaiso University Magna cum Laude. She also holds a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology in School Counseling from the
University of Connecticut where she also graduated with honors. Katie is a
Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, a
National Certified Counselor & School Counselor.
Katie has served as a school counselor in a variety of school settings and was also the Asst. Director of Admission at Valparaiso University for four years. She has had the opportunity to share her research on how to make school counselors better college counselors at various professional conferences including:
The American School Counseling Association,
The National Office for School Counselor Advocacy, the
Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling, as well as
Ed Trust. She is currently serving as a selected editor and reviewer of the best-selling book
"The Black Family's Guide to College Admissions: A Conversation About Education, Parenting, & Race" by Timothy L. Fields and Shereem Herndon-Brown.
In Fall of 2018, Katie was invited to serve on the inaugural School Counselor Advisory Board for
Northern Illinois University. She currently serves on the College Advocate Advisory Board for
Emory University. In 2020, she was honored to receive the Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award for Dedication to the Field of Education by Coca-Cola Scholar program as well as Honorable Mention for the Illinois School Counselor Association's Ray Piagentini High School Counselor of the Year Award. She has also served on the Model Counselor Advisory Board as well as the Diverse Learner Task Force for Chicago Public Schools. At NCP, Katie is the
Students in Temporary Living Situations Liaison, the Peer Mentor Faculty Sponsor, and runs Kato's Corner, the "free general store" for all NCP students.
Katie is also a proud Chicago Public Schools' parent, a former farm kid, a stress baker, a jazz enthusiast, and she LOVES her NCP kiddos! She lives in Chicago with her husband Tom, 10-year-old daughter Sophie, 7-year-old daughter Evie, and dog Donny.
